How to Question Your Inner Critic

Keith Hawes

Question yourself. More specifically, question your inner critic. The inner critic is that part of you that tediously inspects everything about you. Nothing is sacred. Your inner critic will analyze, scrutinize, and evaluate every minute detail of your existence.

So, be kind to yourself. Being a human is hard sometimes.

Life is tough. We all face challenges, and we all have moments that regret. You will never live a life where you get it 100% all the time. We’re creatures that are constantly learning and unlearning. So, be kind to yourself.

Research shows that there area a few things we can do to overcome the negative influences of our inner critic. Here’s a few things you can do so that pesky villain doesn’t hold you back from your potential:

  1. Acknowledge the thought. The Apostle Paul gives a great strategy for dealing with rogue thoughts. His method of “casting down imaginations” first requires that we acknowledge that we even had a thought (KJV, 2 Cor. 10:5)

  2. Sift throught it. Determine if this is a thought that is accurate, or is it just the inner villain doing the dirty work again.

  3. Kill it. Once you have identified your inner critic is feeding you a false narrative, its time to kill the though. You cast that thing down. You choose to focus on something else.
