You feel stuck.
You’ve been in a mental-loop where you second guess yourself. So, as April approaches, you decide your going to make some changes. You get out your phone and begin to jot down a few thoughts and goals. Your going to make some New Year’s resolutions in the middle of the year that will help you get out of the funk.
Don’t do it…just yet.
Your personal break out of the prison of stuckness is contingent upon your ability to think disruptively. Do you want this year to turn out like last year? If you did, you wouldn’t be reading this article. You want change. You desire productivity. Your ambition and drive are there, but you feel stuck. You need disruptive thinking.
What is disruptive thinking?
But what makes thinking disruptive? Lisa Bodell suggests that disruptive thinking begins with the questions that we ask ourselves. Typically, we ask ourselves the “how,” “which,” “when, or “why” type questions. If you’re stuck you simply ask yourself, “why am I stuck?” You may even as, “how do I lose weight.”
Disruptive thinking asks a different set of questions. In an an article on Forbes.com, Lisa Bodwell, asks a set of 10 questions that, by nature, disrupt. Rather than asking yourself the traditional set of questions ask yourself the type of questions that get your thinking creatively. Make sense? It’s the powerfully divergent shift in perspective that makes this process so effective.
Where can I start
If you want to overcome barriers to reaching your goals this year, saddle up and learn to harness the power of disruptive thinking.
Here’s a few questions to get your mental juices going:
If you could change one thing today that would take your life to the next level, what would it be?
Which part of your schedule would you like to eliminate?
What triggers me to eat poorly?
What are my biggest barriers to going to the gym?
What would my future self tell me about my life right now?
